Foundation and History
Code for GovTech (C4GT) began in 2022 as a pilot to create sustainable pathways for meaningful open-source contributions to population-scale Digital Public Goods. Initially implemented by Samagra with support from the Gates Foundation, Omidyar Network India, GitHub, and the Digital Public Goods Alliance, C4GT launched with its flagship Dedicated Mentoring Program (DMP) featuring 13 rigorously selected contributors. The strong early results enabled rapid expansion, scaling to 100+ contributors in 2023 and partnering with 40+ organizations by 2024.
By 2025, the program grew into a global effort with 90+ contributors working across 75+ products in AI, ML, Blockchain, and other cutting-edge technologies with institutions like NHA, MeitY, NUDM, Mifos, and MOSIP.
In 2026, C4GT found its long-term home at the Raj Reddy Center for Technology and Society (RCTS), IIIT Hyderabad, establishing a strong institutional foundation to scale its mission for years to come.
